Fake news: all access claims canelo’s training in lake tahoe when he is actually in truckee

This is Donner Lake, located in Truckee, California.

Lake Tahoe, California,  is a world renowned vacation getaway of wealthy Californians. Sitting at an elevation of 6,200 feet the pristine lake makes a perfect training camp for top of the food chain fighters looking to train at elevation and be isolated in a mountain paradise.

All Access, Showtimes premier countdown show featuring an upcoming bout with Mexican superstar Saul “Canelo” Alvarez versus Houston’s Jermell Charlo, is claiming that “Cinnamon” is training at Lake Tahoe, but to anyone familiar with the area it is obvious that he is training in Truckee, California.

This might seem like a minor mistake but to any locals, or to anyone with Google maps, this is laughable. Episode 2 of All Access begins with a shot of Donner Lake, a smaller but notable lake located in Truckee sitting at an elevation of 5,800 feet. The shot of Donner Lake is taken from the famous Rainbow Bridge that overlooks the entirety of Donner Lake. All Access incorrectly labels the location as “LAKE TAHOE, CA.”

Donner Lake, famously named from the ill-fated Donner Party, is one of the most famous and nightmarish survival stories in American History. In 1846 a wagon train of immigrants headed west to California ended up snowbound in the Sierra Nevada mountains during one of the heaviest snowfall winters on record. The party was trapped in over 20 feet of snow for over 6 months, resulting in many of the survivors resorting to cannibalism for sustenance. At the time of the expedition, California was still a part of Mexico - which is perhaps a reason why Canelo likes the area.

With the famous background and history of Donner Lake and the Truckee area, one would hope that the producers of Showtime would do a little research or perhaps be somewhat familiar with the history of the area they are filming in. They could at least look on Google maps where the featured gym Camp 1 that Canelo is training at, is listed as located in Truckee CA.

It can’t be said for sure but maybe Showtime executive Steven Espinosa had something to do with it. Fight fans will remember him as the helpless victim of a verbal assault from Conner McGregor during the Mayweather versus McGregor world tour.

Must’ve been humiliating at the time to take that kind of abuse from McGregor, but that was nearly 7 years ago, and a lot has changed since then. Espinosa has maintained a low profile, staying relatively out of the news, but McGregor’s recent history has been noteworthy. The famous Irishman has suffered some brutal KO losses, multiple rape allegations, battery charges, and a changed bone structure in his face due to steroid abuse. In the end, Espinosa may get the last laugh, but he or his producers need a geography lesson.
